From removals to restorative pruning: a week of tree work across Canberra

Every week takes us across some of Canberra's best-loved suburbs, and every job is a little different. Some are about clearing out what is no longer wanted; others are about carefully bringing an established tree back into shape. Last week took us to Deakin, Holder and Downer, and the three jobs together are a fair tour of what to expect from us.

Deakin: a full garden clear-out and stump grinding

A proper reset for a garden that had become overgrown. Working from a list the client had marked out themselves, we carried out selective removals across the whole block. Out the front, a run of camellias and a strawberry tree crowding the entrance. In the back yard, three hedge plants sitting in front of a significant established tree so it could finally be seen, along with a photinia hedge and a lemon tree. In the back left corner, a blueberry bush and an old rose to finish the clean-up.

To keep the day tidy we cut every stump back to about an inch above ground and removed all green waste from site. On a return visit we came back with the grinder and took every stump out for good, including the larger one in front of the photinias and another in the front yard. Grinding well below the surface means the client can replant, turf or pave straight over the top.

This two-stage approach is typical of how we run a removal: get the property clear and safe first, then come back and finish the stumps properly rather than rushing it.

Holder: restorative pruning on a mature oak

Over in Holder the work was all about care rather than removal. The front of the property has a lovely mature oak that needed thoughtful pruning to bring it back into good structural health. We removed the crossing branches, cleared out the deadwood, and took out limbs with poor attachment that could become a hazard. Where old cuts had been left as stubs, we tidied them back to the collar so the tree can seal them properly, lifted the canopy over the driveway, and removed the recent burst of epicormic growth. A second, older tree on the block was thinned and weight-reduced to ease the load on its limbs.

At the rear, the left-hand tree needed a more careful eye. There was visible decay at the base, so we thinned it and balanced the sides to bring down the weight loading and reduce the strain on a trunk that is no longer at full strength. All green waste cleared from site.

This is the kind of pruning worth paying for: work that reads the tree, protects its long-term health, and manages risk rather than just tidying the outline.

Downer: deadwooding a pine and clearing the neighbour's roof

A minor but important prune on a front-right pine. Pines can hold a surprising amount of deadwood high in the canopy, so we worked our way up removing all the significant dead branches to the co-dominant union, where the trunk splits in two, and a couple of metres above it, along with any crossing and rubbing branches. We then lifted the canopy off the neighbour's roof to give about a metre of clearance and inspected the tree for damage while we were up there. Green waste removed, everything left neat.

Why we prune rather than lop

You will notice a theme across the three jobs: even when a tree needs a lot of work, we take a considered, selective approach. That is deliberate. Traditional lopping, cutting large limbs back to bare stubs, tends to trigger weak regrowth, invite decay, and create bigger problems than it solves. Proper pruning removes only what the tree can afford to lose, cut at the right points to heal cleanly. It costs a little more thought, and your trees are far better off for it.
